Reading #6 – Dearly Beloved, by Asheli

Play

I hope that I am falling out of love with you
The way that stars fall;
Swiftly, quietly,
Unnoticed except by those who are looking-
And no one is ever looking.

And I hope that I am falling out of love with you the way that flowers die:
Simply, easily,
Returning to the earth with only the pleasant smell of dirt left behind,
And maybe memories.

I hope that I am falling out of love with you
Gracefully, quietly,
So my body doesn’t crumble too much
And I don’t leave dust in my wake.

And I hope that I am falling out of love with you the way comets collide,
violently, explosively,
gone in a second,
and I hope that space is truly somewhere sound cannot travel
So that one cannot hear a heart break.

And I hope that when
I am finally lucky enough to have fallen out of love with you,
I’ll have been pretending I had for so long
That you won’t even notice.
